Slow Cooker Orange Chicken Recipe

I was talking to my grandma the other day, and she mentioned that my brother had brought her and grandpa orange chicken from Panda Express.

and that was it. I needed some.

Ive made lemon chicken a few times in the slow cooker, and was impressed with the results. I tested out the same recipe with orange juice instead of lemonade, and guess what? Instant orange sauce, without ingesting tons of deep-fried grease or a drop of gluten. Yay!

The Ingredients.

1 1/2 pounds boneless chicken, cut in 2-inch chunks
1/2 cup flour (I used Pamelas Baking Mix)
olive oil, for browning the chicken
1 tablespoon kosher salt
6 ounces (1/2 can) frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed (Id opt for little-to-no pulp. The pulp can taste a bit bitter when cooked)
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
3 tablespoons ketchup

updated 9/20/09: Ive heard from a few readers that 1 tablespoon of salt is too much. If you are using iodized or table salt, this will be the case. Kosher salt doesnt taste as "salty" as regular salt, and since the granules are larger, you dont get as much in the tablespoon as you would with regular salt. Adjust accordingly. xoxo steph

The Directions.

Use a 4 quart slow cooker for best results. Dredge the chicken pieces with the flour, and shake off the excess. Go ahead and throw away any remaining flour, we wont need it. Heat olive oil in a large skillet on the stove and brown the chicken on all sides. There is no need to fully cook it, just sear it enough for the flour to stick and get a nice coating.

Plop the chicken pieces into your slow cooker. In a small mixing bowl, combine the orange juice concentrate, brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, salt, and ketchup. Taste. If youd like the chicken to be a bit sweeter, add a touch more sugar. Pour sauce mixture evenly over the chicken, and toss gingerly to coat.

Cover and cook on low for 6 hours, or on high for 3 to 4. Serve over white or brown rice.

The Verdict.

Delicious. All four of us had seconds. Like I did with the lemon chicken, I sprinkled some red pepper flakes onto my portion, because I like a bit of heat. Everyone else at the table ate it as-is, and was quite happy.

other great take out fake out dishes:
Mongolian Beef
Broccoli Beef
Chow Mein
Fried Rice
and for dessert: super soft gluten free sugar cookies

Smartphone and Health Issues Healthy ways to use Smartphone

Smartphone and Health Issues

Smartphones are now a part of our lives. We cant even imagine spending a day with our smartphone. Smartphones have glued into our lives so quickly that we cant even image. A few years ago no one even have any idea of an android phone and how it will make you addicted to it. Previously mobile phones were used only for telephonic conversation, but now smartphones are much more than that. They act as music player, gaming consoles, video players, digital camera and also connects you to social networks like Facebook, twitter with complete internet connectivity.

How Smartphone Affects your Health

Here are few things that might have noticed in your daily life. You should avoid these things to keep your body healthy and live a peaceful life

Smartphones decreases the Fitness Level

In majority of cases smartphones lead to an unfit lifestyle. Playing games, checking your facebook, twitter, whatsapp, watching movies, or surfing the Internet on your smartphone leads to a sedentary lifestyle. By doing these things you keep yourself away from physical activities, which results in lower fitness level. So avoid those activities on your smartphone which are avoidable.

Dont check your office mails late night

Do you know that late-night emails kill productivity (I am talking about work productivity). Usually our phones emit blue light which reduces the production of melatonin. Melatonin makes our body sleep during night. But lower level of melatonin affects our sleep, which results in lower energy level next day. So dont stick to your phone after 9PM. Lack of sleep can initiate various diseases.

Interruption by phone in your night life with parter might lead to problems

Its a common problem for most of the couples. If your phone is interrupting your night life then it might lead to tension with your partner. Your partner might not point it directly but it will create tension between you. So its better to avoid smartphone at night and give time to your partner.

Ringxiety

Did you ever feel that your phone is ringing while it isnt. This is called "Ringxiety" or " Phantom Vibrations" . Its actually a syndrome. It occurs due to over usage of phone. So try to talk less on phone. Use it only when its necessary.

Losing your phone leads to improper behavior

Sometimes people loose their temper if their phone is lost. Sometimes they misplace it themselves and think that its lost. It leads to a very strange behavior sometimes. When it occurs people take it as a heavy monetary loss (certainly smartphones cost a lot) and loss of personal data as well. That personal data may be pics or some naughty text from you friends or girlfriend. In most of the lost smartphone cases people are more concerned about the lost data. So avoid keeping any type of sensitive data on your phone.

Texting could land you in the Hospital.

Some people text while driving or walking. During past few years that number of accidental cases due to typing on phone while walking or driving has suddenly increased. Whatever the matter is, please avoid texting during such situations. If its an emergency then stop and then text it.

Phone Camera reduces your photographic memory

People rely on their phone camera so much that they dont even look at the things properly. They get indulged in taking a pic of it. When we do it our brain thinks that "its stored in camera, why should i take the pain". It reduces our photographic memory as become dependent on phone camera and dont look deep into the objects. Most of the times we dont even look properly into the images captured by our phone camera. Usually we get busy in sharing those pics on some social network to tell our friends that we visited that place. So please avoid using camera and use your eyes to look into the beauty of nature.

Healthy ways to use Smartphone

  • Dont use your phone at night
  • Dont text while walking or Driving
  • Dont keep sensitive data on phone memory
  • Dont play too much games on phone
  • Dont shoot pics everywhere
  • Dont take it as replacement of a desktop

Note: Try to use your smartphone as a communication devive. You control it, dont let it control you. The smart feature should be used when you need it. These smart features can make you addicted, so avoid using them everytime.

Alkaline Diet the diet of the stars!

Its the latest fad diet. The promotion of this "Alkaline diet" is fervently done by many female stars, the very thin head that Victoria Beckham has tweeted the benefits to subscribers (almost seven million!).
Alkaline diet: what is it?

From ... to "deacidify" because a diet too acidic would be bad for health.

Alkaline Diet (alkaline diet) restore the acid-base balance in the body

The acid-base balance
The dogma of the alkaline diet, which is also called "anti acidic diet" is to restore the acid-base balance in the body.
An acid is a substance which releases hydrogen ions (H +), residues of energy metabolism. These H + ions are neutralized by a basic substance (or alkaline, it is the same thing).
The indicator of the balance between the two is the blood pH or possibly that of urine.
pH
The pH is the "potential hydrogen". It measures the chemical activity of hydrogen ions (H +). Established on a scale from 0 to 14, it is neutral at about 7. More is below this number, the more acid. And, vice versa, the more it is over, the more alkaline. The normal pH of blood and cellular fluids is between 7.35 and 7.45: it is very slightly alkaline and very stable.
This balance between the acidic and basic substances - which are then eliminated by the kidneys in urine - is normally and permanently in the body.
Except in rather dramatic circumstances in which we are dealing then with acute metabolic acidosis when the system is overwhelmed and the kidneys can not eliminate excess acids. This can occur in inadequately controlled diabetes, fasting too long, severe diarrhea, poisoning with aspirin (which is salicylic acid).

But in the case of the alkaline diet, it is not to change the pH of the blood, because it is stable, but simply to reduce acidifying foods over and increase alkalizing foods instead.

Do you eat too acidic?

Foods are classified according to their acidifying or alkalizing protein and minerals and also the nature of their metabolic waste.
There are several detailed classifications acidifying or alkalizing foods that raise controversy.
Acidiants food
For acidifying foods, the consensus is on meats and all foods rich in animal protein not only contain acidifying minerals (chlorine, sulfur and phosphorus), but they also deliver a lot of waste acids.
We find the same consensus on industrial products, sweet products, alcoholic and caffeinated drinks. All that you acidify A LOT!
Alkalifying food
As for alkalizing foods, everyone agrees on fruits and vegetables because they contain alkalizing minerals: magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium, but very little protein, chlorine, sulfur and phosphorus.
As for other foods (cereals, dairy products, fats), they are more or less alkalizing or acidifying.

How to know if you eat too acidic and is it dangerous?

Supporters of alkalizing diet recommend measuring the pH of the urine, or several times a day.
How?
Peeing on a test strip (litmus paper, pharmacy) that changes color according to acidification. The more it is red, more urine is acidic.
If your diet is too low in alkalizing products your body to keep your acid-base balance, must go to pump your basic minerals and mainly in the calcium from your bones and teeth for that is that there has in stock.
According to some, this would be the explanation for this disease that is becoming more common osteoporosis and fragile bones. It has already been shown that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables (magnesium and potassium) favored bone density.
According to fans of alkalizing diet, the majority of our present ills, large and small, come from what we ate too acidic. Fatigue stress, to weight gain, cancer and cardiovascular disease, all of this comes from our over-acidification!

Is the alkaline diet dangerous?

In a hard-alkaline diet, you have to remove or significantly reduce meats, fish, meats, eggs, all processed products, desserts, drinks containing caffeine and alcohol which are mostly acidifying. Must be reduced more moderate dairy and grains.
You have to eat fruits, vegetables, almonds and seeds, seasoned with spices and herbs, because all these foods are alkalizing.

How to practice good "Alkaline Diet"?

The first and basic rule is to eat lots of vegetables and fruit at every meal: you are then sure (e) to have a max of alkalizing products.
The second is to forget industrial products (like ready meals, pizzas, etc.), products and sugary drinks. And maximum braking on alcohol and coffee.
The third is to reduce its consumption of red meat and charcuterie: If you are a fan of the big daily steak, eat it two or three times a week and replace with fish and eggs, less acidifying. If you start each meal with a good piece of pie, replace it with raw vegetables or vegetable soup.
The fourth is to leave room for dairy products and grains at each meal.
All this is very similar to a balanced diet, one that we recommend here forever and is the key to weight loss!

Review Get Naked Fast!

At 247 pounds, Diana Stobo was plagued by pain and physical discomfort. After years of struggling with body image, health issues, and the addictive food cycle, Diana became sick and tired of being sick and tired. She decided to take her health into her own hands.

Displaying a list of Nos prominently on her fridge – No Sugar, No Wheat, No Dairy, No Alcohol, No Caffeine, No Meat – Diana "got naked" and watched her life and her health quickly transform.

In her own words, "Getting Naked means stripping down and simplifying the nourishment that you put in your body. I use the term Naked instead of Raw because we are often set up for failure if we strictly limit ourselves to just one thing."

Diana shares her simple and flexible philosophy in the recently published Get Naked Fast: A Guide to Stripping Away the Foods That Weigh You Down.

The basis of her approach is eliminating refined sugars, wheat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine and meat, and in the "Know Nos" section, she offers a sensible overview of how the different foods affect the body.

I found the information easily digestible. There are no "shoulds" or "should nots." She even addresses common questions:

Q: Im addicted to coffee and cant start my day without it. What should I do?
A: If this is the one vice you have while alleviating all the other toxins from your body, then have your cup of joe and enjoy it.

Q: What happens when Im hungry?
A: Its simple, you eat.

I so resonate with her start-where-you-are approach. By taking things one step at a time and allowing your system to gently detox, youll soon see the benefits of Getting Naked. Watch as your energy starts to increase, your skin clears and brightens, your eyes sparkle, and you begin to effortlessly shed unwanted weight.

Diana breaks it all down for you. Shell teach you how to makeover your pantry and explore food substitutions as you begin to Know the Nos. Simple replacements like almond milk for cows milk, or sprouted whole grain flourless bread for your usual wheat bread can make a big difference to your body.

And for those of you who gotta have that cup of joe, she suggests substituting Euromild™ Acid Free Coffee for your daily caffeine fix. Sweeteners, condiments, alcohol, its all laid out. She makes it super easy to make out your new grocery shopping list.

So, what to do with your newly restocked kitchen? Get Naked Fast and start playing with your food!

Dianas created delicious and simple recipes for Naked Nourishment. Most prep times average between 5 and 15 minutes.

I like to start my day with freshly extracted green juice, but many folks like to begin their day with something hearty. Hows Fresh Apple Muesli with Maple-Pecan Cream or Hot Quinoa-Cranberry Cereal grab you? Maybe an Easy Almond Date Milkshake or Julius Kefir Smoothie is more your thing.

Soups, salads, wraps, hearty stews, sweet treats and beautifying elixirs, its all here for you to explore. And lets not overlook the eye candy. Each of Dianas easy-to-make delicious recipes is accompanied by her mouth-watering photographs. Yum!

Your transition to good health, feeling and looking better than youve felt in years, doesnt have to be this giant leap. Start where you are.

Need some hand holding? This is it. Dianas created something tangible you can use and follow. So Get Naked Fast and watch as your life transforms and you take on the glow of health, vibrance and beauty.

Vehicle pollution could be a factor in obesity

Vehicle pollution could be a factor in obesity. This conclusion comes from a French study showing that exposure to products of incomplete combustion, similar to that detected a hundred meters of a highway, an adult can be fat 2 pounds in 15 days ?? .

..Pollution, a trap to grow ...
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzo (a) pyrene and dioxin, are pollutants resulting from incomplete combustion, produced especially by car pollution and industries. In 1983, a link between body mass index and the presence of these pollutants has been suggested. Since 1999, the team of Luc Mejean (Inserm U 308, Nancy) conducts research on the effect of pollutants on fat cells and thus the weight.

Thus his team found that pollutants were able to enter, with the fatty acids (lipids) in adipocytes (or fat cells). In contrast, it appears that the pollutants prevent output of lipids in adipocytes. After injection of pollutants in mice, this is indeed what we observe. This phenomenon is accompanied by a significant increase in weight gain without food modification. This effect is reversible since mice regained their initial weight fifteen days after the cessation of exposure to pollutants. By extrapolation to humans, this weight gain corresponds to about 2 pounds for people exposed to levels of pollutants hundred times lower, but equivalent to that detects a hundred meters of a highway.

Pollution can lead to a significant weight gain
In conclusion, the pollutants from incomplete combustion disrupt the ability of fat cells to mobilize lipids, which results in making substantial weight.

The research is needed to confirm these preliminary data. Meanwhile, epidemiological studies should be established, particularly in people particularly exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, that is to say, living next to a freeway, an incineration plant or a polluting factory ...

Slow Cooker General Tsos Chicken Recipe

When I began my everyday slow cooking challenge in 2008, I really didnt think Id come up with recipes or new uses for the slow cooker.

I just figured Id post what I made in the pot and people would click over to see if I really did it or not. Once readers started commenting and emailing me ideas, I got really into the whole challenge and decided that I should not only use the crockpot everyday, the stuff I posted should be brand-new every day.

and thats when I had a mini panic attack.

you see, I like take-out. A lot.

Those late-night Jack in the Box commercials? They were pretty much written for me in mind.

I get sucked in, and I want whats being marketed RIGHTTHISVERYMINUTE, even if Im full and have already flossed.

and dont get me started on infomercials...

I really shouldnt watch TV.

anyway.

the good news is that I now have an arsenal of Take Out Fake Out recipes and when Im hunkering (hankering?) for fast food or takeout, I can whip something up myself and cook it all by myself in my very own slow cooker.

and so can you!

The Ingredients.
serves 4

1 pound boneless, skinless chicken, cut in 1-inch chunks
4 garlic cloves, minced
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon dried ginger
2 tablespoons soy sauce (I use La Choy because its gluten free)
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (add more to taste at the table if youd prefer more heat)
1 (16-ounce) package stir-fry vegetables (to add later)

The Directions.

Use a 4-quart slow cooker. Put the chicken into the bottom of your crockpot and then add the garlic, brown sugar, ginger, soy sauce, and red pepper flakes. Toss the chicken to fully coat with the sauce ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours, then add the frozen vegetables. Re cover and cook on high for an hour, or until the veggies are fully hot and the chicken has reached desired tenderness.
Serve with white or brown rice.

The Verdict.

The kids and Adam love this sauce, which makes me love it even more than they do. This isnt the traditional General Tsos chicken you order from a local takeout joint, because the chicken hasnt been breaded and deep fried. This is a good thing! Not only is this not laden with gluten, its better for your wallet, your waistline, and your heart.

a few of our other favorite takeout fakeouts:
falafel (yes! really! falafel!)
Indian Curry
Chow Mein
chimichangas
lemon/orange chicken
Korean Ribs
gyro
tamales (traditional, steamed in corn husks)
hot and sour soup
Thai coconut curry soup

I hope youre enjoying your day---today I took the time to watch grass grow. :-)

Brain Development and Memory Charger Drinks

Brain Development is one of the most important part of human body development. This process of development of human brain starts when our body is inside mothers womb. But normally we start to notice our brain functions when we come in this world. Parents notice daily activities of their kids and notice step by step brain development. All of the activities that we do are part of our brain functioning. Memory is the most important part of our brain.

Memory Chargers are gaining popularity as a number of energy drinks are advertised to have these memory chargers. I have seen a number of chocolate energy drinks advertisement that says that they improve our memory and students and get good marks in their exams if they drink them regularly.

According to the advertisements these memory chargers really work and improve memory. They mention it on their products in small letters that the company has performed tests on certain age group kids, and their results show that those kids who have used their memory chargers have performed better. Nobody verify their test results. We just watch Advertisements and think that it must be true and buy it for our kids and then expect them to be super-kids. Amazing fact is that some energy drinks provide 2 in 1 benefits as they improve both physical and mental efficiency ( Thats Fantastic !)

Do these Memory Charger Drinks Really Work ?

Memory Charges are really compounds like Omega 6 and DHA which are also available in vegetables and fruits. These memory chargers are just some ingredients of our daily food if we eat proper food. Drinking these memory chargers in the form of an energy drink might give you a psychological effect that you have used something powerful which will boost your performance. If the price tag and advertisement of these energy drinks gives you a positive thinking then its better. You cant purchase confidence and positive attitude, but you you can buy energy chargers for your kids.

But if you dont want to waste your money then its better to eat vegetable and fruits and find some alternate source to boost your positive attitude.

Does the stress make you fat

Stress can play a key role in weight gain. But if it is not possible to eliminate all the worries of life, eating habits and lifestyle can be adapted.

When you are in distress, lost, missing, must be compensated; can seek redress, love, understanding. It can also be filled with food: the link between weight and stress is obvious.

Food compensation
Some massive and brutal obesity (tens of pounds in a few months) occur after severe psychological trauma. It evokes a hypothalamic disturbance modifying the regulation of energy balance and the "control center" of satiety and hunger. More commonly, it is observed that weight loss is facilitated by relaxation period (vacation ??). Note, obese often have psychological disorders such major anxiety or depression, causing food compensation phenomena. But the restriction they impose is itself a major source of stress, and eating disorders.

Catches of unequal weight

High and prolonged stress causes severe weight taken after 6 to 15, weight gain is more important than the initial weight was high. A University of California study confirms that stress promotes indeed fat accumulation, especially in the abdomen. This phenomenon unjustly more pronounced in women than in thin rounds, also applies to men. In fact, the physiological system managing stress has grown there for thousands of years in order to be able to handle short periods of stress, for example, just before hunting the Stone Age. In the present civilization, when a person is stressed, the body produces a hormone that stimulates an enzyme surplus focusing fat. This was discovered Swedish researchers observing 50 fifties overweight. And this enzyme is more readily absorbed into the abdomen as other body parts.

Stress and weight gain: clinical troubling facts

The team of Dr. Elissa Epel of the University of San Francisco was able to appreciate the influence of stress on excess abdominal fat. Comparing the resistance to stress of 59 American women, depending on whether they had or not a report on high hip size, it was found that women with some beads to the size also secrete more cortisol than other women (a hormone made by the adrenal gland). However, cortisol plays an important role in the physiological adaptation of the body to stress. Fat distribution is not the only factor that comes into play: the weight is also involved. In psychology laboratory, women with an overall excess weight were adapting ultimately better than thin women but having some dimpling wrong place around the waist. For once, there would be an advantage not to be too thin!

Stress negative and positive stress

Stress is not always negative, there is also a positive stress. Good stress or positive stress: all that agrees to do with pleasure, in harmony with oneself. A stimulating stress, source of success, joy, etc. To be classified in this category jitters artists and sportsmen before a performance or event. Bad stress and negative stress: it acts slyly forcing to live "on edge", wasting energy, which is not his good outcome. The same physiological reactions can be triggered by joy and sadness.

Some tips if you are stressed (e)

Take things in hand. No one can live your life for you.
Aim objectivity. Sometimes it is useful to see from the outside, as would another person.
Acknowledge your own resources. If you evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, you will find it easier to resources you have to overcome the challenges of everyday life.
Not "chew" no problems in silence. Many people around you are probably ready to help you.
Stay positive (ve), you will eventually find a way to get by.
Be realistic. If you set reasonable goals and if you do not try to accomplish the impossible, you will avoid disappointment.
You can not control everything, remember to separate things.
Aim flexibility. Mistakes are part of life; we must learn to accept them as such.
For each problem, its solution as you tackle a situation before bending over another, you will have time to pull yourself together and address the other problems more calmly.
Finally, life balance is key: choose the same balanced diet (and especially) in times of stress and the practice of physical activity throughout the year, and enough sleep to better manage potential concerns.

Im Dreaming Of A Green Christmas

My Twitter pal DeepakChopra (we once sat next to each other on a cross-country flight) was recently asked, "What is the meaning of Christmas?"

His lovely answer: "A return to innocence as the Holy Child in all of us."

Beautiful. And yet, during this season thats supposed to be joyous, I encounter way too many people with a serious case of the crankies, bemoaning the traffic jams they face as well as the long lines at the mall. Count me among them. In years past, Ive strayed well beyond the path and lost sight of the holiday spirit as it was intended.

Not this year. I thought long and hard about how I could simplify my holiday "To Do" list and create a wondrous, twinkley season sans the commercialized packaging.

Give Green Gifts

✵ Plant a fruit tree for a healthier planet. The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF) plants orchards at places such as public schools, city parks, low-income neighborhoods, Native American reservations, international hunger relief sites, and animal sanctuaries. FTPF has lovely certificates and organic apple tree grow kits that make wonderful gifts for friends and family.

✵ Giving a Gift of Fairness and Fair Trade from TransFair changes the world by changing the opportunities for farming families and the environment around the world. Starting at just $20, you can give pesticides a pink slip or a honey bee a hive. Cute!

✵ Seva (say-va) is a Sanskrit word for service. Seva Foundation was formed by Ram Dass in 1978 with a mission to alleviate suffering caused by disease and poverty. Giving a Gift of Service is a lovely way to honor friends, family and colleagues. I love these two in particular: sponsor a cataract operation and restore sight to a blind person, or provide seeds for a one-acre community garden on a Native American reservation.

✵ Provide a safe haven for tropical wildlife and slow global warming when you plant a rainforest tree in honor of a friend or family member. For each $10 you give, the National Resources Defense Council will plant a sapling in a newly rejuvenated rainforest in Costa Rica.

✵ The lovely Sarma Melngailis is running a very generous promotion until midnight, December 20th. Hurry! Purchase a One Lucky Duck Gift Card online, and youll receive one for FREE. The bigger your gift card amount, the more your free gift is worth. The best part? Gift cards can be used toward raw goodies at the online store, at both One Lucky Duck locations (Gramercy and Chelsea Market), and at Pure Food and Wine for dinner. Gift cards can be redeemed anytime, with no expiration date.

✵ Email a personalized Amazon Gift Card that can be redeemed for a bzillion items online, no joke. No fees and no expiration either.

✵ Check out Tree Huggers Green Gift Guide. Youll find even more creative eco-friendly ideas for the foodies, techies or fashionistas in your life.

Overweight and obesity beware of plastic food

Plastic food have become ubiquitous. But most of them contain bisphenol A, but also certain phthalates, two chemicals can disrupt our hormonal system. These molecules could play a role in the development of overweight and obesity? And if yes how to protect?

How plastic food promote obesity?
Overweight is growing very fast worldwide. In France today there are more than 7 million people obese. One explanation is based on the great upheaval of our eating habits, including a breakdown of food and the industrialization of food.

Bisphenol A: fertility problems, diabetes as well as obesity ....?
But alongside the new composition of our meals, presentation has changed a lot with a number of increasingly important food presented wrapped in plastic: plastic film, pots, trays, bottles, cans, etc. Knowing that these plastics often contain bisphenol A, an endocrine disruptor associated with fertility disorders and behavior, we can also ask whether food packaging play a role in the current obesity epidemic.

The studies linking bisphenol A chronic diseases have increased in recent years, particularly showing an increased risk of diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity and cardiovascular disease via an endocrine disruption and probably the lipid system. But in addition to the in vitro and animal, those studies that have focused on populations are sometimes contradictory or borderline significance and do not allow us to conclude definitively or to end the controversy.

Hard evidence to materialize
According to a team of researchers published in February 2013 an analysis of the existing literature on the subject (2), difficulties are mainly related to the metabolism of bisphenol A. There is also a confounding factor: the socioeconomic context. Indeed, disadvantaged groups tend to eat more foods with high energy density and processed, it is difficult to know if the packaging or the food itself that increases the risk of obesity, diabetes coronary artery disease. Furthermore, exposure to bisphenol A is multiple and continuous since it was detected in dust, air, water, and is particularly used in thermal paper ...

Phthalates: up to five times higher risk of obesity
It is likely that bisphenol A is just one of many environmental contaminants to which we are exposed and could be associated with chronic diseases: polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides or phthalates. Among these, DEHP, one of the most common forms, is used for number of flexible plastics. In addition to its presence in the personal care products (soap, shampoo), we could also find themselves in nipples or in plastic food containers. Its presence in the blood of children was directly corellée the risk of obesity of these that could see their risk of obesity increased fivefold for the most contaminated!

How to protect yourself from bisphenol A and phthalates in food?
Pending the application from 1 January 2014 to ban bisphenol A in plastic food and utensils, it is possible to limit its exposure. By waiving products whose label indicates the presence of bisphenol A and encouraging those marked "BPA-free" or excluding certain plastic food in your kitchen.

Overweight and obesity focus on group therapy

Overweight, obesity, bulimia, anorexia as well as, eating disorders are particularly difficult to treat. The management should be multiple, combining medical, dietary, psychological and family. In the latter area, group therapy is very interesting. What exactly is this last method?

Food conduct disorders, which include anorexia, overweight, obesity and bulimia, require multidisciplinary treatment: medical, psychiatric, psychotherapeutic, nutritional and family. The symptoms are very diverse, monitoring is necessarily individual. The management protocol typically includes group therapy. What is this method, how do the sessions during group therapy?

What does group therapy?

This group therapy facilitates investment of the person in these therapeutic areas.
The group is a workspace verbal psychotherapy, physical and sensory. The work is psycho-diet, but it is also working on behaviors, eating disorders, and assertiveness, managing and expressing emotions. In the latter route, hypnosis is a help to work on body image and self-image so that the subject appropriates his emotions and feelings.
Past and current problems in relation to family and social group will be repeated in the group and allow to find new resolution channels.

How is group therapy?

Groups are constituted according to the eating disorder anorexia bulimia, overweight obesity.
Before integration to the group, an individual interview is necessary to reassess the indications and facilitate global monitoring.
The number of participants per group is 10 to 15.
Each participant is asked to reformulate its history and his personal position, family, cultural and social.
The first sessions of group therapy are called "semi-open" from the perspective of the commitment participants. by result, the group is "closed", participants and therapists are engaged in a repeated number of sessions in a protocol set in advance. The final sessions are more "soft" so that participants are gradually moving towards the separation of the group.
The protocols are different depending on the time of the sessions (1:30, a day or half a day), rhythm (weekly, biweekly or monthly) and their grouping into modules (one or two modules from 6 to 12 sessions).
Group therapy lasts six months or a year.
Each group is presented and organized by two therapists.
The dynamic is specific to each group, the expression and creativity being preferred.

Success Story I HAVE FINALLY lost weight!

The infernal yoyo everyone knows Nathalie has often suffered. Today, she has lost more than 50 pounds. In recounting the many hardships she went through, his story also demonstrates the important role of psychological injury in obesity.

Beyond obesity, your story is a psychological injury. Could you explain it?

Nathalie : I am a mother of 4 children home. When I was little I was repeatedly raped by a neighbor in my neighborhood, and I was only 5 years. Today, Im 37 and its too late. He was never punished. I had never dared to speak to this day because fear and shame were at the rendezvous. But today I decided that I had the right to exist and become a full-fledged woman and not a waste. Waste that, for months, found himself behind bars in a psychiatric hospital wishing every moment to end his life. All because the rapist who, when I was little, told me: "If you talk, your parents will scold you" (. He gave me candy to shut me) Thats the tragedy of my life ... There are no words face of such acts. Especially as an adult, because of the rape of my childhood, I became morbidly obese (117 kg for 1m69) that can each second switch in death, as I continued to eat candy and other treats keep silent. For years I refused to see the truth in the face. I thought I was unhappy because I was fat. Now I have learned to tell the difference between the cause of my inner discomfort and consequence, obesity, my shield. This shield (fat, supposed to protect me unconsciously against further aggression) was a bit vicious because for years, I had the "what will people say? "Unbearable. In addition, my health took a sudden I was dying slowly ... Fear, shame, guilt, lack of confidence in me, these are the indelible marks etched to the body and the soul of a broken child, a child who one day become "adult" ... a rapist ripped off my joy in life ... I had to reinvent it for the sake of my children.

Why was told in writing your story?

Nathalie : I decided not to remain silent and to detach myself from the past too heavy unbearable. The book is for me a very important step that allowed me to meet my truth, to watch, and to understand it. The choice of the heroine "Nathalie" allowed me to detach myself from that person who has suffered so much in the past to finally reborn Nathalie. Nathalie which now bites the life to the full to see only the present and the future. In addition, this work represents for me the process of my attacker who can never take place because there are prescription. This book is the therapeutic journey that I was forced to do to become a "normal" person and reborn life as much psychologically and physically because now I weighs only 67 pounds. Today I am no longer ashamed to say that I was raped.

 What advice would you give?

Nathalie : I want to show by my example, how psychology is important. Rape created in me a now overcome trauma. I offered a second chance on life and through my testimony I would like to launch a message of hope. In life, everyone has the right to be given the opportunity to get back on solid ground and live, just live and not survive ?? hanging up his life for a piece of chocolate or a slice of sausage ?? I have known in the past, diet regime, yo-yo, bulimia (food compulsive disorder), get down, depression ... not understanding the cause of my discomfort that drove me to want to always eat even at night ... C was a real straitjacket !!! I could never go through with my plan and I was demoralized. Then the trials of life have I decided to look at my face it and have no more fear or shame. Me being released this too full of pain, I have healthy and balanced diet combined with sports and my fight I managed to finally get my 67 kilos. For years, I thought I would never get there, and yet my dream come true ?? I was raped but Im out! I have given myself the time but mostly I found the will and the strength to understand. It is up to each one to make the decision that suits him. The entourage, friends, psychologists, nutritionists (dieticians, endocrinologists ??) can provide help, but the solution is up to each one of us. I hope wholeheartedly that you too one day you succeed. My life has changed because I am given me the right.

Finding Joy In The Journey

Its howling outside my door right now. Howling. And tiny white stuff is falling from the sky. Wasnt it summer, like, five minutes ago?

Oh, it would have been so easy to just say "screw it" instead of getting all bundled up and taking my daily morning walk. But, I didnt. I donned the polar fleece, grateful that I am able to get out and walk. It wasnt that long ago when a trip to the end of the driveway left me tired and out of breath.

Its been four months since I embarked on this journey with the intention of changing my relationship to food and regaining my health by transitioning to a diet high in raw, living plant foods. Chronic health problems that I had begun to accept as "normal," have vanished. Ive regained my bohemian lust for life, and released 62 pounds along the way.

Whenever Ive felt like chucking the whole thing and diving back into the highly refined, processed food, Id get out a letter I wrote to myself and re-read it:
I’m writing you this letter to help you remember why you’re choosing to change your relationship to food and live a raw foods lifestyle.

Remember what it was like buying a pair of size 28 jeans and having them fit so tightly that you couldn’t breathe when you sat down or bent over?

Remember looking in the mirror and not recognizing the obese woman looking back at you? Remember how you felt both sad and repulsed at seeing your disfigured body, stretched to over 300 pounds?

Remember how frustrating it was going to the store and trying on clothes? Everything fit like skin on a baloney or like a huge tent that just hung on your body.

Remember how swollen your feet and ankles became and how painful that was? You had such a hard time finding shoes that fit.

Remember lying down in bed at night and
not being able to breathe freely?

Remember walking up a flight of stairs and being winded?

Remember having no energy and sleeping for hours during the day?

Remember how lonely you felt and how isolated you had become?

Remember how starved you were for human touch but you wouldn’t allow anyone to be intimate with you?

Remember how sick you would feel after gorging yourself beyond being full; like you wanted to vomit?

Remember how you wouldn’t do things that you enjoyed, like swimming and dancing, because you were so self-conscious of how you’d look?

Remember feeling out of control?

Keep up the good work! You are becoming healthy – in body, mind, and spirit. I’m very proud of you. You are changing your life today.
The Buddha reminds me that "Each morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most."

I still have a long road to travel before my body can fully repair itself and heal from the debilitating effects of morbid obesity. But Ill walk that road each morning, even in inclement weather, with gratitude in my heart and a skip in my step ~ and Ill likely kick a few more pounds to the curb along the way.

In Other News...

I recently had the fun opportunity to sit down at the Kitchen Table with naturopathic physician, Dr. Nicole Sundene, and chat about my raw foods lifestyle. Pull up a chair and go check out our interview here.

Lentil Minestrone Soup Recipe

I had a cold last week. Im better now, but there were a few days there when I was pretty much certain that I was going to choke to death on my own snot.

(lovely, just lovely, steph...)

Anyway. I really wanted a soup to soothe my throat and to make me feel loved and taken care of. Since Im home during the day with an almost-three-year-old, there wasnt anybody available to make me soup, so I did it myself (I promise I washed my hands really well first!).

But by the time it was finished cooking, I was back to bed, and was served ---- complete with a Thomas the Tank spoon.

I love my family.

and youll love this soup. Its easy to throw together, uses household staples, and freezes and reheats VERY well. I kept it vegetarian, but Adam suggests I throw in a hambone next time. Sliced smoked sausage would be awesome, too.

If youd like a soupier soup, add more broth 30 minutes or so before serving.

The Ingredients.
serves 6

2 cups lentils, rinsed
1/2 cup diced celery
1/2 cup diced carrot
1 onion, peeled and diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes (with juice!)
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
2 teaspoons paprika
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 cups hearty torn greens, like kale or chard (if youd prefer spinach, stir in before serving)
4 cups vegetable or chicken broth (optional: add another 1 to 2 cups of broth if youd like before serving)

The Directions.

Use a 6-quart slow cooker. Put the rinsed lentils into the bottom of an empty insert. Add the diced celery, carrot, onion, and garlic (if you have a food processor, it might be helpful to use). Add the entire can of diced tomatoes, and add the seasonings and torn greens. Stir in the broth (I used chicken, but any broth will work just fine).
Cover, and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or until the lentils are soft. If youd like to stretch this to feed more, or for a thinner soup, feel free to add more broth.

Serve with grated Parmesan cheese, if desired, and a hunk of garlic bread.

The Verdict.

I ate this for all my meals 3 days in a row and was HEALED(!) from the WORST cold, ever!
that, and I may have taken some Nyquil....

feel tired when you start a diet

All changes in your eating habits can destabilize, at least temporarily, your body. This is why it is common to feel tired when you start a diet. Do not panic or fatality, a few small adjustments can help you regain morale and form.

Did you sleep well and sufficiently?

Any fatigue, even temporary, may be due to a lack of sleep or non-restorative sleep. Try going to bed a little earlier. If lazy mornings of the weekend can help you recover, it is rather the regularity of times of sunset and sunrise that will help you in the long run. You can also use short naps to pass a difficult period. Finally, quiet evening activities and herbal teas may help you sleep. However, avoid sleeping pills.

Are you stressed ?

Stress fatigue and eventually exhausting mentally. Take the time to identify the causes in order to learn how to manage your stress. Is it simply too high a goal weight that you taxed? If this is the case, take the time to reflect and move closer to a more reasonable goal. For lasting weight loss, you should always take your time. And if necessary, put yourself in meditation or relaxation.

Do you not be deficient vitamins?

It is not uncommon that a regime reveals or vitamin deficiencies. Be sure to vary your diet and increase the servings of fruit, vegetables and whole grains. If necessary, take a multivitamin treatment.

Do you have adequate iron intake?

Iron deficiency is very common in young women, particularly because of menstrual blood and a little inclined feeding on meat and offal, iron-rich foods. Think enhance your starchy vegetables and a little meat, fish or seafood.

Do you eat enough carbohydrates?

The carbohydrates that are found in abundance in pasta, rice, semolina, starch, bread ... represent a consistent, satisfying food category that allows to keep until the next meal without being tired and hungry. They must be present at every meal to avoid tiredness.

Are you sufficiently active / active?

If too much sport can tire, not enough is just as tiring. It is imperative to be sufficiently active and engage in physical activity regularly. Make the two sports to three times a week minimum and walk as often as possible.

Limit your consumption of alcohol

Alcohol is a bad friend. It does not improve sleep (if it facilitates falling asleep, he then deconstructs sleep) and gives no boost. In fact, alcohol unnecessarily tired body!

Aerate you

Subway, work, sleep, ultimately, we do not spend enough time outdoors. Or a breath of fresh air stimulates. Get out as often as possible and remember to open several times a day windows, home and office.

And if your fatigue resistant, talk to your doctor, nutritionist or dietician. It is possible that health check is required, in search of a deeper cause.

Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff Recipe

This is a sponsored review from BlogHer and Kraft.

This is a compensated post by BlogHer and PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese and is part of the Real Women of Philadelphia project. This is the second out of four recipes.

Guess what? I have over 500 recipes for the slow cooker, but not one for Beef Stroganoff.

How on earth did this happen?

I really dont have an explanation--- somehow this household staple completely flew off my radar.

Im actually kind of embarrassed.

This is a great beef stroganoff recipe, and it couldnt be simpler.

You can fancy it up by adding a sliced onion or two and a pound of sliced (or button) mushrooms. I didnt, and it still worked beautifully, but I think I would add some veggies next time-- it felt a bit meat heavy to me.

and? no cream-of-something soup required!

The Ingredients.
serves 6 2-3 pounds beef stew meat (my meat was fresh)
1 (10-ounce) container PHILADELPHIA Cooking Creme -- savory garlic flavor

optional: 2 sliced yellow onions, 1 pound mushrooms (sliced, or whole button)
sliced bell pepper, etc.
hot cooked pasta for serving (I used brown rice fusilli)

The Directions.

Use a 4-quart slow cooker. Place the meat into the bottom of your pot. Add the Cooking Creme.

If youd like to throw in onion and mushroom, go for it.

Thats it!
Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, or until meat shreds easily with a fork. Stir well and serve over hot cooked pasta.

Enjoy!

The Verdict.

I love dump and go recipes. I made this on one of our crazy end-of-the-school-year nights when we were only home together for about 20 minutes before heading back out the door. This made us ALL happy, and the baby probably at a good half-pound of meat herself.

As I said up above, Id add some vegetables next time to round out the meal. The morning I threw this in the pot was terribly hectic, and I truly didnt have the time to dig  out a cutting board. I  bet sliced red bell pepper would be lovely...

The garlicy flavor from the Cooking Creme was lovely, and provided a beautiful sauce for the pasta.
The leftovers freeze and reheat well!

PS: Ive contacted the folks at PHILADELPHIA regarding gluten, and the company does not hide gluten in "natural flavorings." As always, please do your own research and use your best judgment when using packaged products.
